July 7 closed the 2026 World Cup Round of 16. Argentina staged a stunning 3-2 comeback against Egypt in Atlanta, while Switzerland eliminated Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw in Vancouver. The quarterfinal field is complete.
Argentina 3-2 Egypt
The defending champions trailed 0-2 deep into the second half. Egypt led through Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko and still held a two-goal lead as late as the 79th minute.
Then Argentina scored three times in roughly 13 minutes: Cristian Romero headed one back, Lionel Messi equalized (his eighth goal of the tournament and a World Cup career-high mark), and Enzo Fernández headed the winner in stoppage time. A tearful Messi led Argentina into the quarterfinals again.
Egypt exits after a brave run that exceeded most pre-tournament expectations.
Switzerland 0-0 Colombia (4-3 pens)
At BC Place in Vancouver, neither side scored in 120 minutes. In the shootout, Ruben Vargas converted Switzerland's fifth kick as the Swiss won 4-3.
Switzerland reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in more than 70 years and will face Argentina next. Colombia's campaign ends in the Round of 16.
